Every building
deserves a stable foundation
– use Ground Screws!

Simplify the difficult with ground screws!

Ground screw, earth screw, screw anchor, earth anchor or pier anchor – this simple and effective foundation has many names. Stop Digging’s ground screw works the same way as a concrete post or pier block, whilst outperforming it across the board. With our helical screws you can quickly and easily set out a stable foundation and begin construction immediately.

Our ground screw is the best solution for supporting wooden decks, sheds, greenhouses, conservatories, carports or other structures such as flagpoles, signs or fences. Stop Digging offers a range of screws in different models and sizes to cater to whatever building project you have in mind, and on whatever terrain. Whether it is soft or hard ground, our screws are fully functional when sunk and there is no need to waste time waiting for wet concrete to set.

Stop Digging!

Stop Digging is a Swedish company that designed and developed the ground screw: a modern and cost-effective ground anchor for both large and small construction projects. Our business ethos is not only to provide a high quality product, but to deliver and install it to the highest professional standard, saving you work, time and money. We install ground screws for a wide range of projects the length and breadth of the UK, all year round and in all weathers. Stop Digging’s professional installers will take your idea from the page and create a strong and stable foundation for you to complete your project.

Case studies of building projects with ground screws

Decking

Normally, decking does not need planning permission if it is no more than 30 cm above the ground and does not cover more than 50 percent of the garden area, although exceptions may apply. Furthermore, decking is not usually permitted for flats and maisonettes without special permission. In all cases, check with your planning office as restrictions may apply due to historic, environmental or other factors.

As a first step we recommend you measure and mark the location of the decking in your garden. This will enable you to more easily visualise the decking, how it will be used, and the impact it has on the surroundings. It is also useful to think about the type of furniture and other items you want to place upon the deck so that it is not too small, or difficult to manoeuvre around.

If you are building over a lawn it is a good idea to cover this with a landscaping fabric followed by gravel to prevent the grass and weeds from poking up through the slats of the deck! The deck joists need to be anchored into the ground, usually at 2 metre intervals in all directions. This is ideally suited to the versatile ground screw rather than the older, heavier concrete piers or posts. Stop Digging’s installer will arrive at your home with all of the necessary equipment and will sink the beam screws according to your plan. Then, without delay, it’s time to start building!

When the grid of ground screws is in place you can immediately attach the pressure-treated wooden joists creating a frame, preferably with bolts for added strength. It is usually recommended the joists are at least 45 mm x 170 mm in order to have sufficient load bearing strength. It is also advisable to install a very slight slope (2 mm drop per metre) away from the house to improve water drainage. The floor joists are then attached to this wooden framework with sloping screws or joist brackets at approximately 400-600 mm intervals. When the joists are in place, the fun begins with the fixing of the deck boards!

Building outdoor spaces

When you are planning to build a pergola or covered garden space planning permission may not be needed, but there are several restrictions so it is best if you speak with your planning officer about your design.

Pergolas, patio covers and other similar structures often can be purchased as kits or just bought as parts at your local DIY store. In either case, the design and construction is the same, using posts and beams resting on a sound foundation. The ground screw from Stop Digging is the perfect solution for installing an outdoor building such as this. As there is enormous variety in the design and manufacture of these structures, the versatility and precision placement of the ground screw is the best choice for such a foundation. Depending on the positioning and frame construction we recommend our post, adapter or beam screw. Often a combination of these over variable terrain gives the best results. Contact your local installer for a consultation and a quote. We have extensive experience in underpinning garden buildings across the length and breadth of the UK.

Building fences

You will need to apply for planning permission if you wish to erect or add to a fence, wall or gate that is over 1 metre high or next to a road. If you are replacing a fence then you do not need to seek planning permission if you are not increasing its height or footprint. Fences are the cause of many arguments so please involve your neighbours!

Fences have to take a lot of punishment from wind, rain, moulds, plants and children of course! We offer a range of post ground screws of different sizes and heads for attaching a wide variety of posts shapes. The size of the ground screw depends mainly on the height of the fence, with, for example a 70 mm x 95 mm ground screw easily supporting an 80 cm high fence with a post gap of 1.8 metres. We recommend you select pressure-treated wood, stainless steel screws and other fittings for longevity. When it comes to the fence’s design, google can help, but it is also a good idea to talk with your neighbours to find a mutually satisfactory design.

Measure out where you should have your fence and mark the ground at 1.8 meter intervals, for example. Call Stop Digging and our installer will come out and anchor all the post screws you need, after you inform them of any underground services or other issues. Once installed, you are good to go!

Building sheds and other garden buildings

Sheds and other garden buildings can avoid planning permission if they are built away from the boundary and are single storey. They should typically not exceed 2.5 m in height for flat roofs or 4 m for pitched roofs. As there are several restrictions it is best to speak with your planning officer about your design.

As there is enormous variety in garden buildings, from kits through to self-made designs, ground screws are a versatile and flexible solution for any foundation needs. For example, a simple shed can be built on a deck-like foundation or frame and the number of supports will vary depending on the size of the structure. Stop Digging’s beam screws are ideal for this, and can be quickly and easily installed and adjusted for a level frame. Or, if the shed is a kit, then our adapter screw may be a better fit. Other storage buildings, such as bicycle sheds, bin rooms or children’s playhouses benefit enormously from the flexibility of ground screws and their precision adjustment for height and location. Contact your local installer for tips and quotes!

Building a carport

If you want to protect your car, a carport is a good alternative to a garage, especially as planning permission is less problematic. Carports often do not need permission as long as they follow the limits and conditions set down for this structure. This includes that they have a maximum height of 2.5 m, are single storey, and are not built in areas of Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty or World Heritage Sites. As there are a variety of restrictions, please check with your planning officer regarding your design.

We recommend that you design the carport in a similar style to the surroundings so that the extension does not detract from your home. Don’t forget to install an electric socket in the carport for charging, cleaning and other tasks. Do not skimp on the dimensions so that parking is stress-free!

Building holiday homes and other houses

Ground screws can support holiday homes and summer cottages in all models and sizes. Many house manufacturers offer pre-assembled finished homes, whilst others offer kits and of course many choose to build their ideal holiday home in loose timber. There are extensive planning rules around such structures, so please speak with your planning officer about the process of gaining planning permission for your design.

We often want to build holiday homes in remote locations with fantastic views, which makes construction more complicated. These are often in coastal areas where the terrain can be tricky to dig with stones, rocks, sandy coastal soil or heavy clay. This makes the ground screw an unbeatable foundation for such buildings. Not only can it easily penetrate such soils, but also our equipment can reach places that are awkward or inaccessible for concrete foundations. Steep slopes are easy with ground screws! What’s more, ground screws represent a less damaging option both to the terrain and the climate, which can make your design more attractive to planners.

Which of our different screw models is best suited depends on the design of the holiday home and its location. Normally the beam screw or adapter screw are ideal, but speak with your installer for advice. We have plenty of experience creating strong foundations for holiday homes in a wide variety of environments and we are more than happy to advise you at any stage of your building project.
